Who am I?
I’ve been a distance runner most of my life, and have done a lot of races, from 200 meters to 250 miles. I’ve never been very competitive and consider myself an amateur, though a friend once suggested I was an experienced ultrarunner. After some arguing, we settled on the term “seasoned midpacker.”
I’m also a Type I Diabetic, and have been navigating diabetes management with endurance sports for most of my adult life. In the course of my journey I’ve connected with several other diabetic endurance athletes— there are dozens of us! If you’re a Type I Diabetic interested in connecting, send me a message!
A few FAQs about me:
How did you start running?
My first race was at age 5, when I ran the Run for the Zoo 5k in Albuquerque with my dad. I later ran Track in middle school (200m, 400m, discus) and then Cross Country and Track (1600m, 3200m, 4x800m, discus) in high school. In college I helped found the Club Cross Country team and raced in the first-ever NIRCA National Championships. I ran my first marathon at Philly in 2009, my first ultra in 2015, and my first 100-miler in 2018.
What are some of your PRs?

I was diagnosed in September 1999.
Do you use a CGM or insulin pump?
I am currently using the Dexcom G6 CGM (continuous glucose monitor) and take multiple daily injections (MDI) of Lantus and Humalog.
Do you follow any special diet?
I try to eat “No Sugar, No Grain” or NSNG, which is a lower carbohydrate diet that avoids refined sugars (candy, sweetened beverages, highly processed foods) and bulk grains (bread, pasta, cereal, rice). I do eat a fair amount of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, eggs and dairy.
What do you do for a living?
I’m a mechanical engineer for a company that provides field engineering services to steam power plants and other heavy industrial facilities.
Any other hobbies?
In addition to trail running, I love building and maintaining trails. I also enjoy general fitness like weightlifting and occasional HIIT. I recently started collecting vinyl records (check out the I’ve Got That On Vinyl Podcast).
